Summary

This is where the dragons went。 They lie 。。。 not dead， not asleep， but 。。。 dormant。 And although the space they occupy isn't like normal space， nevertheless they are packed in tightly。 They could put you in mind of a can of sardines， if you thought sardines were huge and scaly。 And presumably， somewhere， there's a key。。。

Hilarious and incredibly witty， dense with puns and references （though some needed to be explained to me as they were English references I was unfamiliar with）， and wonderfully fleshed out though incredibly flawed characters （in the most endearing way though）。 As someone who absolutely loves fantasy books， I really enjoyed this book as an 'anti-fantasy' fantasy book。 I loved the emphasis on the under-dog being the 'hero' vs the typical， 'do no wrong' hero。 Pratchett made fun of generic fantasy t Hilarious and incredibly witty， dense with puns and references （though some needed to be explained to me as they were English references I was unfamiliar with）， and wonderfully fleshed out though incredibly flawed characters （in the most endearing way though）。 As someone who absolutely loves fantasy books， I really enjoyed this book as an 'anti-fantasy' fantasy book。 I loved the emphasis on the under-dog being the 'hero' vs the typical， 'do no wrong' hero。 Pratchett made fun of generic fantasy themes while also constructing a wonderfully imaginative world and a story that was gripping read itself with characters I grew to love。 One of my new favorite authors！All in all， I thoroughly enjoyed this book， my introduction to discworld， and I am incredibly excited to read the rest of the series！ 。。。more

I opted to do the audiobook for this one — recuperating from major back issues and a 45 minute walk around the house each morning needed some sort of silver lining。 Pratchett’s books are the funniest I have ever read and this one was no exception。 I am not a fan of audiobooks in general， it seems like poor Irish accents are the go to for actors to include some individuality。 This book was no different， but I managed to overcome my bias。The only downside: walking around the house with buds in my I opted to do the audiobook for this one — recuperating from major back issues and a 45 minute walk around the house each morning needed some sort of silver lining。 Pratchett’s books are the funniest I have ever read and this one was no exception。 I am not a fan of audiobooks in general， it seems like poor Irish accents are the go to for actors to include some individuality。 This book was no different， but I managed to overcome my bias。The only downside: walking around the house with buds in my ears， laughing out loud for no apparent reason， earned me some strange looks from the neighbours。 。。。more

Feia molt temps que no llegia Terry Pratchett。 Pràcticament havia descartat tornar al Discmón a viure aventures esbojarrades， paròdies del gènere fantàstic amb un humor britànic molt peculiar que no m'acabava d'encaixar。 L'univers creat per l'autor té un mèrit enorme， però no sempre connectem amb una determinada manera d'escriure。 Llavors és quan Mai Més Llibres anuncia que publicarà Pratchett en català。 I el que va passar a continuació us sorprendrà。 O no。Una estrafolària secta monàrquica idea Feia molt temps que no llegia Terry Pratchett。 Pràcticament havia descartat tornar al Discmón a viure aventures esbojarrades， paròdies del gènere fantàstic amb un humor britànic molt peculiar que no m'acabava d'encaixar。 L'univers creat per l'autor té un mèrit enorme， però no sempre connectem amb una determinada manera d'escriure。 Llavors és quan Mai Més Llibres anuncia que publicarà Pratchett en català。 I el que va passar a continuació us sorprendrà。 O no。Una estrafolària secta monàrquica idea un pla maquiavèl·lic per derrocar el patrici d'Ankh-Morpork， la ciutat més gran del Disc， i restaurar per fi la monarquia。 El pla inclou molta màgia i un drac immens aficionat a socarrimar tot allò que troba al seu pas。 El que no han calculat és que tindran l'oposició de la Guàrdia Nocturna de la ciutat， encapçalada pel capità Sam Vimes i amb una nova incorporació， el llancer ras Safanòria。 Ningú no espera que aquesta colla de dropos faci res， però situacions desesperades exigeixen mesures desesperades。 I no hi ha ningú més desesperat que en Vimes i els seus homes。Una edició excepcional i una traducció excel·lent són la carta de presentació d'aquest volum。 L'argument és força reeixit。 Hi ha molta conya sobre els contes de cavallers i princeses， moments hilarants i situacions absurdes。 Però també crítica social i un dibuix acurat de les baixeses humanes， emparades sempre per l'humor。 Continuo trobant-hi un excés de bromes absurdes， no m'acaba de funcionar que siguin tan constants。 També agrairia que l'autor fes servir capítols。 Però m'ha fet riure puntualment， la història enganxa i és el que m'ha agradat més de la saga， de moment。 Ja no tanco la porta a tornar al Disc。 Això sí， serà en català， o no serà。 Gràcies Mai Més per la feinada ingent que s'endevina rere aquestes edicions。（SERGI） 。。。more

i dont ever know what to rate things … but anyway this was really dang good。 such a fun read！！！！ i wanted to get into the discworld novels so i decided to start with the ~city watch~ category of books， of which this is the first。the world is so strange， the characters are chaotic and hilarious。 this story is about the city watch — a group of 4 very quirky individuals who are not at all taken seriously by the citizens of their city。 it’s ironic because they actually aren’t allowed to enforce anyt i dont ever know what to rate things … but anyway this was really dang good。 such a fun read！！！！ i wanted to get into the discworld novels so i decided to start with the ~city watch~ category of books， of which this is the first。the world is so strange， the characters are chaotic and hilarious。 this story is about the city watch — a group of 4 very quirky individuals who are not at all taken seriously by the citizens of their city。 it’s ironic because they actually aren’t allowed to enforce anything so they’ll run after criminals really slowly so that they won’t catch them… things like that…。read this if you like high fantasy settings and want to laugh！！！ 。。。more

I liked it。 Copaganda， but I liked it。 Gotta say， at times it was quite predictable though。 This was my first discworld book and I'm ready for the rest。 Definitely will try to read them all。 I feel this would also be a good fantasy for beginners （duh）。 I also liked that it wasn't as weird about sexuality as many other books in adult fantasy， while still not being entirely child-friendly in that way either。I don't think it passed the Bechdel test though。 I liked it。 Copaganda， but I liked it。 Gotta say， at times it was quite predictable though。 This was my first discworld book and I'm ready for the rest。 Definitely will try to read them all。 I feel this would also be a good fantasy for beginners （duh）。 I also liked that it wasn't as weird about sexuality as many other books in adult fantasy， while still not being entirely child-friendly in that way either。I don't think it passed the Bechdel test though。 。。。more

de dragones， el enfrentamiento de la ciudad por el sistema de gobierno y las dificultades que encuentra la Guardia para encontrar su propia esencia serán algunas de ellas。 El protagonista sobrepasadoSin embargo， el autor juega con nosotros y destacará a otro personaje por encima de este jovenzuelo。 El capitán Vimes， en la que es su primera aparición en las novelas de Mundodisco， acaparará toda la atención， ya que será el típico personaje decadente que ha perdido la fe en lo que hacía。 La aparición de Zanahoria no supondrá un reafirmarse para el capitán， no creáis， pero la del dragón… Con él se nos planteará uno de los temas principales， qué es lo bueno y lo malo y la relatividad de la justicia。 De este modo， se hace un tándem muy interesante Vimes-Guardias （liderados， sí， por Zanahoria） que repasarán todas las cuestiones sobre lo legal， lo justo y lo bueno。 Es decir， no habrá nada esencialmente malo， pero sí si partimos de un punto de comparación。 El desarrollo del personaje， junto a los demás， pero en él especialmente， supondrá para la obra el desarrollo de una de las grandes figuras de este mundo， contenedor además de la esencia completa de la ciudad: las normas hay que cumplirlas con moderación， sin molestar a los demás y siempre para que se mantenga todo como hasta ahora。 Dragones voladoresEste protagonismo de la Guardia es compartido por la criatura fantástica que más nos puede gustar el dragón。 Primero aparecerá como esa quimera con la que soñamos， para luego convertirse en algo patente y que funde cosas。 Su aparición para ciudad no supondrá solo un cambio en el sistema de gobierno （¿por qué？ ¡Ah！， averiguadlo）， sino también un ejercicios de cómo lo imposible se puede hacer realidad y se las va apañando。 Es muy curioso como a través de este ser， Pratchett siembra el terror en la historia y la esperanza en el corazón del lector。Pero es que， además de este gran dragón， tendremos quizá dos de los personajes que más me han gustado en todo lo que llevo leído de Pratchett。 Uno es Errol， un pobre dragón amorfo que solo sobrevive， y otra es Lady Ramkin， una noble de la ciudad que se dedica a la cría de dragones de pantano。 Desde luego que ambos personajes pondrán el punto cómico a la trama， ella una mujerona （en el mejor sentido de la palabra） que defiende la integridad de los dragones por encima de la propia， y el pobre dragoncín que si llega a perrete es ser generoso。Sin embargo， con ambos aprenderemos también lo que es la superación， la esperanza y la fuerza （¿o gas？） interior。 Enseñarán al lector， sí， pero también aprenderán de ellos la Guardia， y en especial Vimes， y la ciudad entera de Ank-Morkpok。 Creo， sinceramente， que sin la aparición de estos personajes， la Guardia no sería ella en los siguientes libros。Un dragón en mi corazónNo sé si lo habré contado ya， pero yo empecé con este autor con una de sus obras más maduras， con más complejidad y donde el punto cómico era alto y «elevado»， por ello el resto de obras que he leído quizá se me han ido quedando un pelín a medio gas。 Sin embargo， con ¡Guardias！ ¡Guardias！ he vuelto a disfrutar como una enana de su prosa。 La comicidad de Pratchett no es facilona， te exige al leer， y sus historias siempre tienen un algo detrás que conecta todo。 En este caso， la idea de cuál debe ser el régimen político， qué es lo justo y qué es el bien andan por nuestra cabeza como el dragón por el cielo。 Además， tiene personajes que son entrañables， en este caso Vimes， Errol y lady Ramkin me han ganado por su complejidad， pero también por su fondo。 No puedo sino recomendaros la obra， os reiréis， pensaréis y disfrutaréis de un rato muy muy agradable。 Desde luego， recomendadísimo。 Espero que os guste。 。。。more

4。5/5 starsThis is the first book I’ve read through of Pratchett’s， and I was pleasantly surprised。 This book is so incredibly humorous with very unique and realistic characters。 They have to be since this book is incredibly character driven at first， which hooks you in。 But around 50%， the plot starts to pick up and keeps you wrapped up in the action。 Incredibly lovable， these city watch guards and their companions have amazing chemistry and dialogue to the point that I don’t mind just reading 4。5/5 starsThis is the first book I’ve read through of Pratchett’s， and I was pleasantly surprised。 This book is so incredibly humorous with very unique and realistic characters。 They have to be since this book is incredibly character driven at first， which hooks you in。 But around 50%， the plot starts to pick up and keeps you wrapped up in the action。 Incredibly lovable， these city watch guards and their companions have amazing chemistry and dialogue to the point that I don’t mind just reading their silly conversations， even if they seem a tangent from the main plot。 This might bother some， but I definitely enjoyed their quips。 Overall a wonderful book and I’m excited to start the second， “Men in Arms” 。。。more
